My work on stage is driven by one conviction: everyone deserves to be known, heard, and valued. That conviction doesn’t stop when I leave the stage.
Showing Our Strengths Publications
When my son Will was six years old he suffered a traumatic brain injury that changed our family forever. In the aftermath I wrote his story from the inside out, imagining what a six year old boy was experiencing through the coma and recovery, and telling it through his eyes. I wanted Will to one day be able to see what happened, to know how far he had come, and to know how truly amazing he was.
We started sharing the book with family and friends. The advocacy happened naturally.
Then came the real world. Teachers who didn’t understand. Checklists that seemed helpful but created more complexity. Long letters listing everything Will needed that never quite captured who he actually was. A young man with short term memory and processing challenges being told to study harder because he looked fine and capable from the outside. Passionate teachers who meant well and genuinely cared but were sabotaged by a system designed to support him that didn’t always know how.
In desperation we shared Will’s book with his teachers. It transformed how they worked with him overnight.
We realized Will didn’t need a better checklist. He needed people to truly see him. And when they finally did, everything changed.
That’s what a Journey Book does. It doesn’t list a child’s challenges. It tells their story in their own voice so the people in their life can finally understand, advocate, and show up the way that child deserves.
I shared that book with a speaking colleague, Tom Hobbs. His response changed everything. “You have a tool,” he told me. “And it’s going to impact millions of children around the world.” That conversation became Journey Book Stories. And then it kept growing.
Today, Showing Our Strengths Publications is a company Tom and I co-founded in 2024 to create advocacy books and resources for individuals and families navigating special needs at every age and stage.
Our Journey Books tell a child’s story in their own voice. Our I Wish You Knew Me book extends that mission to adults. And our GRACE advocacy guide gives anyone the tools to advocate for themselves or someone they love.
Will is now an adult and a living miracle. He is also the reason this work exists.
